Mader was born in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire in England on April 24, 1977. When she was older, she spent a year in New York where she appeared in multiple advertisements for L'Oréal, Colgate and Wella Hair. She received her first television role in 2000 as episodic character Kim on Madigan Men and had another episodic role on Third Watch before gaining recognition for her main roles on ABC soap operas All My Children, in which she portrayed Morgan Gordon, and One Life to Live, in which she portayed Margaret Cochran. In between these, she had a number of minor television and film roles.
In 2006, she landed yet series regular role, this time on the short-lived Fox legal drama, Justice. In 2007, Mader began starring as Charlotte Lewis, a renowned anthropologist with a mysterious past, on the successful ABC TV series, Lost; this is arguably the role she's best known for. She continued starring on the show until 2008, when her character was killed off. However, she continued to have guest appearances up until the series ended its run in 2010.
It was announced in late 2013 that Mader would be appearing in ABC's hit fantasy-drama, Once Upon a Time, in which she would portray the main villain during the second half of the show's third season. After the mid-season finale had aired, the proceeding promo revealed Mader's character to be the Wicked Witch of the West, based on the main antagonist from L. Frank Baum's famous novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. She made her debut when the series returned in March 2014 in the episode "New York City Serenade", and continued to appear for the remainder of the season. After spending a majority of the fourth season away, Mader reprized her role several episode before the finale, and was promoted to the main cast for the fifth season.
Up until 2008, Mader was married to Joseph Arongino; the couple separated in 2007 and got divorced the following year.
